Key Skills You Won’t Find with an Algorithm

2 min readAug 15, 2020

Yes it’s true. You need a baseline. There are certain skills a candidate needs at a minimum to work in the technology field. However, the important skills that determine whether or not a candidate can add value aren’t necessarily found with an algorithm.

1. Do They Love Technology? Is your candidate collecting certifications or are they passionate about emerging technology. Do they live and breath it? This passion is something no algorithm is ever going to pick up. You’ll see it in they way their eyes light up as you discuss the latest WIRE article.

2. Is your Candidate Easy Going? Would this person be pleasant to work with? Are they eager to collaborate? Their skills as a team player aren’t going to show up on a resume. How do they handle feedback? The way they respond to constructive criticism can make all the difference to team cohesion.

3. Does your Candidate take Pride in their Work? Another characteristic unlikely to reveal itself to an algorithm. You’ll have candidates who take pride in their work and pay attention to detail. It’s an important quality to look for in a new hire.

4. Are they a Problem Solver? Unless they’ve specifically used the term on their resume, you’ll want to assess any candidate for this critical skill. It’s important to have employees who look for ways to improve your existing products and services.

5. What can the Candidate Teach You? Most people don’t think of this during the hiring process. A candidate who’s passionate about emerging technology may actually be able to teach you something. If you’ve ever coached or mentored, this is an “aha” moment for you. Often times you realize during the coaching process that you learn almost as much from the person your coaching. A candidates capability to teach you and your team something isn’t going to get flagged by any algorithm.

Conclusion. Much has been made about the implementation of Artificial Intelligence into the hiring process. While candidates need to possess a baseline technical competence, there are some skill that won’t be apparent to any algorithm in existence today.
