Did you know in the early 1900’s it was widely believed a horse named “Clever Hans” had the ability to do arithmetic?
But he couldn’t. Of course he couldn’t, he was a horse for crying out loud.
Turns out rather than performing feats of arithmetic, Hans was watching the body language of his trainer.
No trickery was involved. The trainer was reportedly unaware Hans was responding to his cues. Even after the story was officially debunked about Clever Hans amazing feats, his trainer refused to acknowledge the findings and continued to show Hans all over Germany to large and enthusiastic crowds.
