AI Logistics at the Tactical Edge

Rune Technologies Raises $24M to Modernize Military Sustainment

While defense tech headlines often spotlight drones and battlefield robotics, a quieter but equal revolution is taking place in military logistics. And Rune Technologies is leading the charge.

As TechCrunch recently reported, Rune has raised a $24 million Series A to scale its AI-driven logistics platform, TyrOS. The round was led by Human Capital with participation from a16z, Point72 Ventures, XYZ Venture Capital, Pax VC, Forward Deployed VC, and Washington Harbour Partners. This latest funding signals a growing shift in Silicon Valley’s defense posture: from weapons that go boom to software that keeps the boom resupplied.

From Whiteboards to Autonomy

Rune was co-founded by David Tuttle, a former U.S. Army field artillery officer and JSOC veteran, and Peter Goldsborough, a former Meta software engineer. The pair saw firsthand how modern warfare have exposed the limits of traditional logistics systems.

“The U.S. military runs on Excel spreadsheets and whiteboards and manual processes right now to execute logistics operations,” Tuttle told TechCrunch. Rune was born to change that.

Their platform, TyrOS, turns static, human-intensive supply chains into intelligent, adaptable “supply webs.” It does this through a combination of deep learning models, time-series forecasting, and constraint-based optimization. TyrOS is capable of predicting needs, optimizing current resources, and enabling operations even from a disconnected laptop in a remote combat zone.

In short: it’s cloud-capable, but not cloud-required.

Why This Matters

Logistics is rarely the star of military innovation, but it’s arguably the most mission-critical. Without fuel, food, ammo, or spare parts, even the most advanced weapons systems grind to a halt. Rune is tackling hard problems like:

  • Route planning under threat constraints
  • Aircraft load planning with real-time adjustments
  • Inventory distribution across multi-echelon networks
  • Scheduling with asset, bandwidth, and personnel limitations

TyrOS has already been piloted by the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps, with plans to expand across other services. The platform has also integrated with Palantir’s Defense OSDK, reinforcing its ability to serve as connective tissue between tactical and strategic levels of decision-making.

Rune’s goal is ambitious: to automate logistics across the full spectrum of military operations, feeding tactical-level data all the way up to defense industrial production planning.

Job Spotlight

To meet growing demand, Rune is now hiring for several high-impact roles, including:

Backend Engineer — Optimization

Salary: Up to $235,000 Location: Remote

This isn’t your average backend role.

As part of the Planning & Optimization team, you’ll build the computational core of TyrOS — developing algorithms that turn ambiguous battlefield problems into executable logistics plans at machine speed.

Your work will directly support operations in degraded, adversarial environments, solving real-time challenges like:

  • Convoy routing under threat
  • Load balancing for aircraft
  • Multi-modal logistics scheduling
  • Sustainment planning for distributed operations

Tech stack highlights:

  • Go, C++, Java, or Rust
  • Experience with OR-Tools, Gurobi, or similar solvers
  • Strong background in operations research, applied math, or scientific computing
  • Comfort with edge compute environments and unreliable networks

You’ll collaborate with domain experts, ops researchers, and platform engineers to push the limits of what logistics software can do in real-world, high-stakes environments.

If you’re a high-performance engineer, particularly with a background in logistics, optimization, or edge computing, Rune offers a chance to write code that matters. Your algorithms won’t just run, they’ll move people, parts, and platforms in real-world missions.

This is operational-grade AI for the defense frontier.
