F*ck your Calendly Invite
Status is a zero-sum game. ~Naval (Share this quote on Twitter)
Late last year I connected with someone who asked me to go to their Calendly link and set up a meeting for this month, March 2022. When the reminder popped in my inbox I thought it was clever spam/phishing and deleted it, only to find out it was from the person whom I had scheduled to meet with because they sent me a text. Embarrassing, yes.
It was the second time I’d connected with someone ‘prominent’ who sent me to their Calendly page. Luckily, the first one had little lag time and I made the meeting as planned. Both times I remember a sickening feeling over the whole ordeal of being ‘sent’ to Calendly. Something felt off about the process.
I later realized I’d fallen victim to the ‘status game’. The idea of pawning me off to your Calendly and picking a date and time in the future seems efficient and productive at first glance. But it isn’t. It’s a pure status play.
Is this a generational thing? Am I making too big a deal over this, or do you think I have a point?
