There are hundreds of TEDx events around the country, and thousands around the world. Joshua Lisec, internationally renowned and celebrity-endorsed ghostwriter, is an alum. By happenstance the other night, we connected on a Twitter Spaces, and he laid out the blueprint for doing a TEDx of your own.

I was fortunate to come across his work thanks to the YouTube algorithm putting his own TEDx talk from 2018 in my feed: Solopreneurship: How to Create Your Dream Job from Scratch. Naturally, it caught my attention and the lessons stick with me to this day.

But let’s get down to business, or else I’ll likely start dropping adverbs, which is why we can’t have nice things. The first step is to find an event near you whose theme matches your expertise.

The second step is to write a persuasive pitch for why you are the ultimate authority on the topic. You won’t have a lot of space on the application to profile your expertise, but you can have Joshua help you write a TEDx talk at no cost.

The third step is to borrow what works from your material; books, blog posts, podcasts, etc, –your most impactful ideas, stories, and strategies, and convert them to everyday language. Speech is different from the written word. You won’t need to do the same things an author would who is trying to keep a reader’s attention.
