III. The AI Novel-writing Tool Everyone Hates

Sudowrite’s Story Engine was used to generate a roughly 22,500-word cyberpunk novella called The Electric Sea. The novella relied human guidance, but every final line was created by hitting a “Generate” button. Story Engine puts text generation into every step of the process, expanding a human-generated idea into a finished product. The AI was strongest when pitched a broad idea with specific commands like “use vivid sensory literary prose focusing on small details.” While the process was vastly faster than normal writing speed, the AI-generated prose was corny and relied on cliches.

II. The Art of Prompt Engineering

Prompt engineering is the process of fine-tuning the text prompt that a user submits to generative AI models in order to obtain specific results. Effective prompt engineering allows AI models to perform various roles, with different models suited to specific tasks.
