The Unremarkable Millard Fillmore
Did you know the Millard Fillmore Society was formed in 1963 to celebrate the mediocrity of U.S. President Millard Fillmore? Better yet, did you even know we had a President Millard Fillmore?
Indeed we did. Millard Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States, in office from 1850 to 1853.
Members of the Society claim Fillmore was “the first to establish a White House library, the first to have a bathtub, the first to have an iron cookstove, and the first to have a stepmother.”
And it looks like ‘ole Fillmore was the first to free climb the Washington Monument and take a GoPro selfie — though in an age of generative AI, this may well be what the kids call a “deepfake” nowadays.
