Did you know Francisco de Orellana encountered tribes of warrior women while exploring South America in 1542?
These encounters reminded Orellana of the warrior women from Greek mythology known as the Amazons.
To honor these female warriors, Orellana decided to name the river he was traveling down the “Amazon” River.
