Writing Advice from Jerry Seinfeld and Seth Godin

You've probably heard of comedy sensation Jerry Seinfeld and marketing genius Seth Godin. Both are prolific writers. Here's some advice you can use:

Set aside time to write for at least an hour every day. Block everything else out. Chain yourself to your desk and do nothing but write. In an interview with Tim Ferris, Jerry says blocking off a set time is key to becoming a better writer. He says even if you can't think of anything to write, don't leave the desk! I've heard this advice from a number of other people. It seems to have merit.

Start slow, maybe 10 minutes each day, so by Friday you're at 50 minutes. Just under an hour. So easy even a cave person could do it.

You may have heard of the Dear Prudence method - write a letter to someone. During your self-appointed hour - do just that. Write a letter to someone.

Don't write some "Hi. How are you doing..." bullshit. Pick a topic you like. Then write an email to a friend explaining the topic so a fifth grader could understand it. You don't have to send it, or otherwise publish it.

I've admired Seth Godin. A blog post a day since, well, forever. He's written over a bazillion articles at this point. Consistency is key here. If you write an email every day explaining what you're interested in - BOOM! You're doing deliberate practice! And you may be on your way to becoming the next Seth Godin.
